Good book. Just finished practicing the first pieces. I'm sure I can play that at my church.
Reading other reviews, I wasn’t sure if this was truly an Easy Piano book. I believe it is. I needed one song from this book to play at a funeral. Really wanted to see a sample of the inside, and couldn’t find any. This is why I’m posting a picture.
Easy Piano... well, okay, if you're comparing it to Chopin? Yes, child's play.Down to the serious. I am a musician. I am also a teacher of music. I also lead worship, and have done this for about 15 years now.As for this book. The arrangements are okay. But are not for anyone who has had less than a year of lessons, and maybe up to two years, depending on how serious you are and how much you practice and learn in that two years. But if you are studious, a year will still be the entry level on average to be able to play any of these tunes at tempo after a week of practice. Now, as to the content. "Top 50"... well, some yes, some not. However, the song selection is subjective to the people who compiled this volume. So while I would not have included at least fifteen of the songs contained here, that is not to say they do not have value as a learning tool as you begin to embrace playing piano for worship.Okay... what bugs me about these books is the fact that in the piano part, the melody line is woven into the fabric of the piano music. But worship is not purely instrumental music. We sing worship more than merely playing worship music. Music accompanies worship. We do not play the melody lines over 99% of the time, especially during vocal sections. So the arrangements will have to be pared down by the player after learning them, which will only be possible if you are taught how to do this. I have taught myself to do this, so don't have the issue.Ironically, though, the keyboard players I work with in worship do not play these songs even remotely the way they are arranged here. They tend to listen to the recordings and pull their parts from what the original player is doing. But I recognize this is written for recreation, not for preparation to play worship at Church (though it is a good introduction to that idea).Granted, this IS an easy play version. But I guarantee the "actual" arrangements you will buy in the normal book will not be a whole lot different. They'll weave the melody in the piano arrangement, it won't be "accurate" to what's on the record, and so on.All that said... this is a good tool to get you moving forward. You will learn arrangements of songs, some of which you will actually play in worship. And because they're generally "easy", with a little tweaking, you can adapt the piano parts in part by referencing the chords written above the music to help you omit the melody line and create a more comping style approach. So, if you're taking lessons, and have at least a year invested in playing, this book will work. But ask your teacher how to get rid of the melody line and adapt the chords into the "accompaniment" approach so you're supporting the melody, not playing it - except where it should be echoed between verses, at the beginning of the song, and maybe at the end.Do that, and you can't lose.
Nine out of duplicates from Top 50 Christian Hits and The Giant Book of Christian Sheet Music - that's 9 out of 50 found in the other two books. Songs are written either in the Key of C, G, or F. Most of the bass notes are very simple - one or two notes. The songs are either 3-5 pages long and with the way the books are bounds it is difficult to turn the pages and then have the pages stay open. Perhaps with wear this would be less difficult but I am concerned about how well he the binding will hold up. I am glad to see that the lyrics are included with each song and the print is large enough to make it easy to read. I would say these books are more for an intermediate in that the bass notes may not line up with the corresponding treble notes. In another words, the left hand may be playing a different rhythm than the right.. Thankfully, the melody is found in the treble cleff and not on a vocalist line which is found in many other songbooks. Chords designations are also listed for guitar or can used to supplement the left hand. I am also thankful for these books being available and work done by Carol Tornquist in arranging these songs.
I took piano from third to fifth grade and then part of one year as an adult. This book is easy enough to not be too frustrating, but challenging enough that I have to practice for a while before playing a song effortlessly. I would say I am early intermediate level. I am at the end of Alfred book 3. (Not the adult lesson book). I took the book down to Staples and had them put it in spiral form (4.50?) and that made it much easier to turn the pages. I am really enjoying playing out of this book and my daughters say they enjoy hearing me play! Win! Win!
These songs are easy. But that doesn't mean they sound easy. The arrangements are beautiful. These are good songs that students can prepare quickly but still have fun and sometimes a bit of a challenge playing, depending on their level. My students in Faber levels three and four play out of this book easily. The song selection in this book appeals to everyone, and the arrangements of the songs can really impress an audience.
I received this book today and I am enjoying it so much! Easy piano!I enjoy praising the Lord!It is also easy to read big symbols:) I love it!Spend the time like this worshipping the Lord is precious!Thank you for arranging this book Ms. Carol Tornquist!
Thought these were intermediate arrangements, but they are rather simple.
Really great book for beginner to intermediate student, depending whether it is for work (beginner) or more recreational (intermediate). Good variety of songs, and also really varied arrangement styles so they don't all end up sounding the same. I've been extremely pleased with this purchase!
