Hart has done a careful job of sifting through all of Agatha Christie's stories and novels devoted to Miss Jane Marple to piece together this "biography" of the spinster detective. The book opens with a description of Miss Marple's hometown, St. Mary Mead, a village south of London. The reader is introduced to many of the residents, from the Vicar to the fishmonger's delivery boys (all of whom are named Fred). From the Marple works Hart extracts references to the detective's past, and reconstructs her girlhood and the genesis of her career. The author also follows Miss Marple through the 1930s and World War II, and describes her appearance and personality, daily routine, travels and relationships with relatives and friends. Though the casual reader of Christie mysteries may think this is a bit precious, Miss Marple zealots will find it charming, and a suitable companion to The Collected Stories, reviewed above. Canadian author Hart has gleaned a remarkable amount of biographical detail from a careful (and obviously enjoyable) reading of the 12 books and 20 short stories featuring Christie's favorite female sleuth. After describing the village of St. Mary Mead, Hart recounts Miss Marple's life and adventures chronologically, then explores her personality and detection methods. This very readable study concludes with an extensive Marpelian bibliography. Recommended for fans and skeptics alike. Although very different in format and method, Morselt's book is another labor of love. One-page character and plot summaries are presented in separate chronological order for 66 novels and 144 short stories. These are numbered sequentially and followed by an appendix identifying "who-dunnits" tied in with the numerical keys, so that the mysteries aren't spoiled for the potential reader. About the Author
Randall S. Kroszner is the Norman R. Bobins Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, which he joined in 1990. He was a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers in Washington, DC, from 2001 to 2003. From March 2006 to January 2009 Professor Kroszner served as a Governor on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Board. A specialist in the regulation of banking and financial institutions, corporate governance, international financial crises, debt restructuring, and monetary economics, he served as director of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and editor of the Journal of Law and Economics. Professor Kroszner received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1990.

Louis Putterman is Professor of Economics at Brown University, where he has taught since 1980. He is coauthor of Economics of Cooperation and the Labor-Managed Economy (1987, with John Bonin), author of Division of Labor and Welfare (1990), coeditor of Economics, Values, and Organization (1998, with Avner Ben-Ner), and author of Dollars and Change: Economics in Context (2001). Professor Putterman's current research interests focus on experimental economics and development and international economics, particularly the economics of China. He edited the first edition of The Economic Nature of the Firm and coedited the second edition with Professor Kroszner. Professor Putterman received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1980.

almost like the one I had in high school - soon to be a lost art! so I decided to refresh myself so I can use it in meetings - you know the boring ones so that the person next to you has no idea what you are writing. love confusing people!!

I used this book before and found it excellent. I did not carry through with practicing, so I am back with the book again. I was/am very pleased with it.Con: My only nitpick is the colored background (dark blue with black fonts) which sometimes makes it difficult to read. But otherwise, it is an excellent book and still worth 5 stars.

i was thankful to be able to purchase this at such an inexpensive price. The wear was reflected accurately in the description and in the price.
